Old Timers Day

Gene Van Puymbroeck made it two for two in NCGA qualifiers this year. After making the NCGA Zone team back in February, he joins Jack Woods in representing Shoreline GC in the NCGA Senior 4-Ball Net Tournament this August.

Jack Woods net 64 won him his entry and first place in the second flight along with the low net side pot.

Gene shot a gross 70, net 66, that won him the first flight, the low gross white tees side pot and three skins that included a chip in for eagle on #9 and a closest to the pin on #8.

Danny Barreras knocked it stiff on both #4 and # 17 for two closest to the pins. He made the putt on #17 to win a skin there too.

Jim Cottrell rebounded from a tree eating his ball on #2 to win a skin on #4.

TIGER’S STREAK ENDS

You’re saying to yourself, “NO!”

“I saw him make the putt on 18 to win at Bay Hill.”

Yes he won the PGA event, but his birdie only put him and his partner Chris Arata into a tie for first in the second flight at the Pro Am by Proxy where the team of Rick Wheat and Carl Peterson’s back nine 28 won the tiebreaker.

Shoreline will go down as the site of Tiger’s first defeat of 2008.

Chris is having a Tiger-like year having cashed in three of his four tournaments this year.

The team of Dick Dalton and Ken Duke won the first flight by a Tigeresque margin of three strokes.

Siva Ramamurthy won a skin, two closest to the pins, the Low Gross side pot and paired with Bubba Watson to take third in his flight.

This event marked the return to action of Norm Akita who took fourth in his flight and took home two skins.

Bill pretty much won every way you could.

He also won the “Champion of Champions”, tournament inside the tournament, for flight winners of the past year. He also took the Low Net Side Pot and won a skin with a birdie on #8 after getting the closest to the pin.

After taking second in his flight and earning a spot on our Zone Tournament team last month, he and his partner Doug Patterson beat out Bob Wang and Kurt Klemm to win the 2-Person Best Ball event on March 2. Chris also won a skin. I think he needs to start buying some drinks.

The team of Gary Toepper and Jim Cottrell won the tiebreaker for 4th over Bill Ball and Todd Rich.

Bob Wang edged his own partner Kurt Klemm to take the Low Net Side Pot while Val Aguiniga won the tiebreaker to take the Low Gross. There were six skins worth $15 each with Danny Barreras taking two with birdies on #6 and #16.

Our club NCGA Zone Qualifying tournament was held this past weekend in glorious sunshine at Shoreline Golf Links.

George Mahoney held the first round flight 1 lead after Saturday while Jonathan Fisher led the second flight. Both went on to win their flights and make the South Bay Zone Tournament team. They will be joined by Chris Arata and Siva Ramamurthy. Siva made a big move on Sunday passing 20 players with his net 69.

The big winner however was Jonathan Fisher. In addition to winning the flight and an entry to the Zone, he also won a skin on Saturday, and BOTH low net side pots (Saturday in a tie breaker) for a total of $204 in cash, $100 in gift certificates and his Zone entry. Not a bad weekend.

The tie breaker for 5th/6th in the first flight between Dick Dalton and Chris Mateo went deep. They tied total net. They tied back nine on Sunday. They tied last six holes on Sunday. They tied last three holes on Sunday. You had to go back from #18 all the way to #15 before we could decide the winner.

There were some great “closest to the pin shots”: Gordon Bendorf on #4 on Saturday and Shmuel Goshen on #8 on Sunday. We also had a couple of multiple skin winners with James Jones getting 2 on Saturday and Bill Anderson pulling down 2 on Sunday.

Our next tournament is a 2-man best ball on Sunday 2/24. Grab a partner and come on out.

And don’t forget our first general meeting of the year will be held an Michael’s on Wednesday 2/20 at 6:30 PM. It’s the new member orientation so come out and meet the new members. For all you new members, come out and meet the board of directors and some of the other club members. New members get a free sleeve of golf balls just for showing up.

It was a “family affair” today at the Stableford Tournament at Shoreline today, the first tournament of the year.

J. Michael Jensen and his wife Dany, playing in her first tournament as a member, both cashed. Michael won the Flight 1 and Dany placed 4th in Flight 2.

While the course was a little soggy from the rain earlier in the week, the weather was almost perfect after a small blob of fog burned off. Bright sunshine, mild temperatures and almost no wind ruled the day.

Our next event is the NCGA Zone Qualifier on January 26 and 27. It offers the best prize the club offers all year: paid entry into the NCGA Zone Tournament including rounds at Poppy Hills and Spyglass for the top four scores in the two day, low net event.

Here are the highlights of the Shoreline Greens Advisory Committee meeting held November 20 attended by Jim Handzel:

#13 Green - The major dirt hauling and rough grading on the 13th fairway has been completed. Irrigation installation and clean up grading were scheduled for the week of November 26 with hydroseeding to follow. The green and surrounding areas were sodded in early November and some of the green sod has already taken root. There will be a new cart path from the left of the 13th green to the 14th fairway installed as well. The new green is scheduled to be open April 1. Maybe sooner.

Friday Greens Fees - The committee decided to keep the current fee structure started in July for Friday play and continue to monitor revenue and number of rounds.

Course Improvements - There are no further major (causing closure of a portion of a hole) course improvements scheduled. The bridge from #4 tee to #4 green will be replaced, but will not result a prolonged hole closure. However some damage will be sustained where the crane used to place the bridge is brought onto the course. It was recommended that minor construction to level tee boxes be a priority.

Scorecard/Yardage Guide - Two companies have approached the course about providing, free of charge, a combination scorecard/yardage guide that is subsidized by the placement of advertisements. The committee felt that the yardage guide would provide infrequent players with more information and a more enjoyable experience and, hopefully, more play. That combined with the cost savings to the course led the committee to try the program for a year. The selected company will be coming out and measuring the course and we could see the new booklets in the fall.

If anyone has any course issues, contact Jim Handzel at bamawalrus@aol.com and he will relay your question/concern at the next meeting scheduled for December 18.
